The word Pinellas is from the Spanish words Punta Pinal which means "point of pines". Pinellas County was discovered by a man by the name of Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528. Narvaez and 400 of his soldiers came to this area in search of riches. What he found instead was the Tocobagan Indians that had been occupying the area of Punta Pinal for hundreds of years. After ransacking their huts and destroying their villages, Narvaez enslaved them and questioned them about the gold. The Tocobagan Indians sent the Spaniards north to the territories of Georgia and Alabama. This left Punta Pinal quiet for the next few hundred years. By the early 1800's the Tocobagan Indians had died off and were now replaced by the Seminoles. In the early 1830's, Count Odet Philippe of France came to what is now known as Philippe Park in Safety Harbor, here he established his plantation and introduced the area to the first citrus grove. Philippe persuaded more settlers to come to the area and it was in this next decade that the area began to boom. Up until January 1, 1912, Pinellas County was part of Hillsborough County and was known as West Hillsborough. Trips to and from Tampa proved to be arduous and difficult. Traveling through the marshlands and trails that were often impassable, to make business meetings was sometimes near impossible. After many years, a bill was finally passed to make West Hillsborough its own county. Clearwater, which was known until 1895 as Clear Water Harbor, was made the County seat.
Today, Pinellas County has become a home to cities such as Clearwater, Dunedin, Gulfport, Indian Rocks Beach, Largo, Madeira Beach, North Redington Beach, Oldsmar, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Seminole, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Tierra Verde and Treasure Island. Because Pinellas County is a peninsula that is surrounded by the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico on one side and Tampa Bay on the other, the water sports and entertainment that are provided here are endless. Whether you choose to spend your day boating, fishing, paddling, snorkeling, diving or just soaking in some of the most beautiful sunsets that Florida has to offer, a day in Pinellas County is one to remember. From teeing off at the Fairway Village Golf Course in Largo to dodging the hazards of Tarpon Springs Golf Course in Tarpon Springs, Pinellas County offers some of the most challenging Golf Courses in the State of Florida. Spend the day strolling through some of St. Petersburg's incredible museums, and the evening watching the breathtaking sunset from Clearwater Beach.
With Pinellas County being a peninsula, real estate opportunities are endless. Whether you’re looking for a place to retire, raise a family or vacation, Pinellas County offers something for everyone! From the small beach community of Treasure Island to the bustling city life of Clearwater, Pinellas County has it all. With less than 2,500 residents, Bellaire offers homeowners the chance to enjoy the close community lifestyle with the fast pace city life of Clearwater only minutes away. Waterfront homes, condos or villas in Madeira Beach offer homeowners all the beauty that the waters surrounding Pinellas County has to offer. The county is built out, which is to say, that the opportunity to purchase land in Pinellas County to build on, is not available. However, the opportunities to purchase an old beach house to tear down and replace with your dream home, are available throughout the county.
Relocating to Pinellas County can provide many opportunities to living your life to its fullest. With its abundance of history, beauty and incredible people, Pinellas County offers a lifetime of learning, enjoyment and memories.
