Clearwater was originally known as Clear Water Harbor, or 'Pocotopaug' to the Native American Indians at the time, named after the beautiful clear springs that once inhabited this area, up until 1895.  During the Seminole Wars in 1835, Fort Harrison was built as a recuperation center for soldiers.  The fort was abandoned in 1841and is gone now, but at one time it was located where Harbor Oaks lies today.  James Stevens, also known as the "father of Clearwater", was one of Clear Water Harbor’s first settlers and was significant in the aid of turning the area into a prosperous city.  Rev. C.S. Reynolds established the first newspaper entitled "The Clear Water Times" which was another aid in the prosperity of Clear Water Harbor.  Henry Plant, a developer of the time, built a standard gauge railroad through Pinellas County, known then as Punta Pinal, Native American for 'Point of Pines'.  In order to drum up the passenger business, Plant built several grand hotels, including Belleview Biltmore.  As Clear Water Harbor grew, the word 'Harbor' was dropped in 1906, leaving the city with the name as simply, Clearwater.  In the early 1900's Clearwater was considered part of Western Hillsborough County, but as the surrounding communities grew, the need for county division grew as well.  In 1912 Hillsborough County was divided and Clearwater was named the county seat of Pinellas County and three years later the city became incorporated.
