Dunedin, once known as Jonesboro, has a history that can be traced back to 1870 when John Branch built the first store on the waterfront.  It was here that a dock was built to accomodate schooners and sloops looking for fresh water and trade goods.  The crops that were being raised in Jonesboro at this time were watermelon, sweet potatoes, oranges and cotton.  Cotton soon became the main crop in the area and Major M.G. Anderson built a small cotton gin for marketing.  During this time George L. Jones opened a general store and placed a sign over his store calling it Jonesboro.  The people in the community started to catch on to the name and began to call the settlement Jonesboro, as well.  But the name didn't last long.  Two Scottish settlers, J.O. Douglas and James Somerville, arrived in Dunedin and opened up a new general store in the cotton gin building.  They began to promote a new name for the community, Dunedin, which is a gaelic interpretation of their hometown in Scotland, Edinburgh.  There are many different ways to intrepretate the meaning of Dunedin but the more comman usage of the word means Dun "rock" and Eiden "castle" or The Castle on the Rock. Dunedin was incorporated into a city in 1925.

As of 2003, the estimated population of this incredible city  was more than 36,000.  Located on St. Joseph Sound on the Gulf of Mexico, gives Dunedin a subtropical setting with breathtaking, unobstructed waterfront views. This village-like city promotes annual art festivals, music festivals and celtic festivals to give residents and visitors alike the community feeling that so many cities lack in today's world.
