In the early 1900's, during the land boom, the State was selling the island for $1.25 and acre. Tourists would come to these beaches on the weekends and at this time, there weren't any bridges, so visitors had to rely on ferries. Property owners were burying and then "discovering" wooden chests along the beach, claiming that the chests were filled with treasure, in order to sell their properties. The news of the "treasure" spread, and soon the Island was known as Treasure Island. Coney Island was the name of the first hotel on the beach, built in 1915. In 1939, the Treasure Island Causeway Bridge was complete and after WW II a few more hotels and homes began construction. In 1955, the City of Treasure Island, Florida was incorporated.
