In 1887 Gulfport, Florida was known to locals as Disston City in honor of a gentleman by the name of Hamilton Disston. Disston owned 4-million acres of Florida land including almost all of Gulfport. During this time there were many attempts at trying to get newcomers to the area. Disston tried rallying his business connections to bring a railroad to the city, but the rails would only go as far as St. Petersburg. In 1906 another developer, Captain John F. Chase, tried luring Civil War Vets to the city and changed the name to Veteran City. In 1910 after the realization that there were not as many veterans as he had hoped for, the name changed to Gulfport and the city was incorporated. During this time, many people used their property as art studios and Gulfport remains a thriving arts community to this day.
