Largo, Florida was once known as "Citrus City" due to the rich citrus farmland that inhabited the area. In 1886, the Orange Belt Railroad began running through the area and the community residents joined together in re-naming their city. The name Largo was chosen after the town's larges lake, which, 50 years later, was completely drained by the Cross Bayou Drainage District. The town of Largo, Florida was officially incorporated in 1905 and in 1913 was the first town in the State of Florida to adopt a town manager form of government, not to mention the second in the nation. After being hit hard by the freeze in the late 1920's and then the Great Depression, Largo, Florida, had hit a surmounting debt. It wasn't until World War II when the veterans returned home that the population of Largo took off. In 1962, another freeze hit the city of Largo and developers were quick to build homes in place of the citrus, which in turn, caused the population to grow once again. In 1970 the city was donned the "city of progress".
Today, Largo, Florida consists of a population of more than 74,000 residents. Largo has become a great city for both families and retirees alike. With it's multitudes of recreational centers, country clubs, parks, fishing, and golf courses, entertainment is always abound. Heritage Village is a small village that contains 23 different historical structures and exhibitions such as spinning and weaving are held on a regular basis. In October of every year the Country Jubilee takes place. This festival consists of crafts, entertainment, historic home tours, children's activities and more.
