During the Seminole War, policies, such as The Armed Occupation Act of 1842, were put into place to eradicate the Seminoles Indians and populate Florida with White settlers.  The Armed Occupation Act of 1842 entitled any male head of the house or any single 18 year old man 160 acres of Florida land as long as they agreed to cultivate some of it, and, most importantly, fight the Seminoles if the need should arise.  Joseph Silva and John Levique took advantage of this opportunity. In the summer of 1848 these two settlers sailed to New Orleans to sell cargo and on the way back home they ran into a hurricane.  This storm was of such magnitude that it rearranged the shoreline to the extent that any landmarks that were known to these two settlers were gone. Upon looking for a safe passage back into the harbor, John LeVeque found a much more northerly opening that was never seen before. This pass is known now as John's Pass, in his honor. John's Pass is the inlet between Madeira Beach and Treasure Island.

Today Madeira Beach is the home to close to 5,000 residents. Most of these residents reside on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico or are only minutes away.  Madeira Beach, only 2 miles long, is the home to some of the most breathtaking sunsets, sea-breezes and beautiful beaches.  This area is primarily residential but does offer plenty of shops, boat rentals, entertainment and restaurants at John's Pass Boardwalk for all ages.
