In the later part of 1830, Odet Philippe and his family came to what is now known as Safety Harbor. Here he established a citrus plantation and imported tobacco seed from Cuba. This prompted him as the first cigar maker in the area! With the fishing as good as it is in this area, Phillippe supplied fish to the U.S. Army during the Seminole Wars, in 1835. In 1856, when Colonel William J. Bailey purchased the mineral springs on the shores of Tampa, the area became known as Bailey's Bluff. It wasn't until 1917, with the major development of the area that was inspired by the railroad and health spa, that the town was renamed to Safety Harbor and incorporated.
Today, Safety Harbor is the home to 17,000 residents and the historic Espiritu Santo Springs. These springs were named in 1530 by Hernando de Soto who founded them while in search for the famous Fountain of Youth. These springs have enticed visitor’s world wide for their curative powers and continues to attract visitors to the area. The Safety Harbor Pier has provided a beautiful view of some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the area.
Although, Safety Harbor is primarily a residential community, its residents have taken careful precautions to preserve Florida's environmentally sensitive lands.
